Come on by the Blue Heron Nature Preserve for the quietest, most environmentally friendly show around! #naturepreserve #happy4th #nativeplants #flowers #bhnpatlanta
Seriously, I never see as many beneficial insects Seriously, I never see as many beneficial insects on any other plant as I do on this species. It’s a pollinator party every day! 🎉

Penn State University concluded this too in a trial it conducted to determine which plant attracts the greatest diversity of pollinators. Mountain Mint tied for first place with Goldenrod, another favorite in our Meadow for Monarchs!

Summer at Blue Heron is full of unexpected friends Summer at Blue Heron is full of unexpected friendships—from new camp buddies to a surprise encounter with a bullfrog! 🐸

The best part of camp? Every day is a chance to explore, discover, and connect with the wild world around you.

There are still a few summer camp spots left: hop on over to bhnp.org/summer-camps to join the adventure today!
🪲 Are our camp counselors bug wizards?! They ju 🪲 Are our camp counselors bug wizards?! They just might be.

Check this out: our campers found this incredible Eastern Hercules Beetle—the same day our counselor Dusk Grams showed up wearing his Hercules Beetle socks. Coincidence? We’re not so sure. 😮😮😮

Dusk also wants you to know the following facts about the Eastern Hercules Beetle:
🪵In their larval stage, they eat primarily decaying wood
🌳At their beetle stage, they enjoy eating rotting ash wood trees, rotting fruit, and tree sap
🪲These big beetles spend most of their life underground... so it's very exciting to discover one!
He’s got plenty more animal facts where that came from.

At Blue Heron, kids are free to launch bottle rockets, get muddy, explore the wild, and have a blast—without worrying about blowing up the backyard.

Please leash your dog and clean up after them while visiting Blue Heron. Here’s why it matters:

🐾 To protect wildlife.
You know Fido won’t pass up the chance to chase a river otter if he spots one. While your dog might think it’s fun, our top mission is to protect this land and its wild inhabitants—including the plants that can be trampled when dogs go off-trail. Keeping pets leashed helps us do just that.

🐶 To keep your dog safe.
Beavers, snakes, deer, and otters don’t always appreciate canine curiosity. A leash helps prevent dangerous encounters and keeps your pet out of trouble.

👣 To ensure all visitors feel safe.
Even the friendliest dog can be intimidating to a stranger. Not everyone knows your pup, and everyone deserves to feel comfortable using the trails.

⚖️ Because it’s the law.
The City of Atlanta requires dogs to be leashed in public spaces—simple as that.

💩 And finally… please pick up the poop.
As the saying goes, it all flows downhill—and here, that means into the creek that feeds the Chattahoochee River, Atlanta’s main water source. Even bagged waste can contaminate the waters we rely on for drinking and play, so don't leave anything behind.

Thank you to all of our responsible dog owners who are doing your part to keep the Preserve safe for everyone.... humans, plants, and all animals included 🌿🦦🐾💕
