Groovy Geology of Blue Heron
Groovy Geology of Blue Heron
Come learn all about the unique geology that surrounds the Preserve!
Join Bill Witherspoon, co-author of Roadside Geology of Georgia for another exciting Second Saturday Safari program. Learn in a brief presentation about the 375-mile long groove in the landscape in which the Preserve is nestled, along the Brevard Fault Zone. Be startled by the groovy greens, blues, and pinks in a microscope image from a rock collected next to the parking area. Then, take a walk at the south end of the Preserve adjacent to the old mill dam, where pockets of mica known as buttons gleam from the bedrock.
In this fun walk and talk, participants will be able to:
- Explore Blue Heron’s geological features
- Learn about the Brevard Fault Zone
- Ask questions to an expert
- And so much more!
Roadside Geology of Georgia, a full-color 320-page guide, is the 31st book in a Mountain Press Publishing series for the general reader and has sold more than 10,000 copies. “Our goal is to take the reader to Georgia’s natural wonders and explain the science that lies behind the scenery,” says Witherspoon, who taught geology to K-12 students and their teachers for 17 years at DeKalb County Schools’ Fernbank Science Center. He co-authored the 2013 book with Dr. Pamela Gore of Georgia State University. Signed copies will be available for sale at the presentation.
What are Second Saturday Safaris with Blue Heron?
An outdoor education series, open to adults and families alike. Each workshop offers a deep dive into the ecology of our protected greenspace, highlighting the importance of the species that call Blue Heron home.
On the second Saturday of each month from 10 am to noon, we’ll gather at the Preserve with guest experts for engaging talks and guided walks through the trails. It’s a chance to deepen your understanding of the natural world, connect with passionate experts, and experience the beauty of Blue Heron in a new way.
