Pre-K

Designed with the "whole-child" in mind, Blue Heron's pre-K programs emphasize sensory exploration in nature. Through hands-on experiences catching butterflies, building birds's nests, and creating rock collections, pre-k students learn how to safely play and learn outside. 

 

Program Details

  • Length: 90 minutes. 
  • Scheduling: We schedule field trips Monday - Sunday. You may choose any 90 minute period between 10 am and 6 pm. 
  • Topic Selection: Pick one of the topics from Plants, Animals, or Land and Water categories (see below). If you don't see what you are looking for, contact us! We will gladly design a program to fit your needs. 
  • Fee: Please note, reduced pricing is available upon request for groups with demonstrated financial need. 
    • Groups of 45 or fewer: $10/child, with a minimum of $75.00.
    • Groups of 46 to 90: $8/child, with a minimum of $150.00. 
    • Groups over 90: Please contact the office for pricing and scheduling information. We can only accommodate 90 students at one time. Larger groups can schedule multiple field trip days. 
    • Teachers and Chaperones: Free
    • Parking: Free

Plants

Seed Discovery: Seeds can be soft, hard, sticky, smooth and many more textures! We'll search for seeds in our woodlands and meadows. Children will make a small seed collection.

Plant Discovery: Plants of all shapes and sizes grow at the Preserve. Discover what makes a plant a plant, and create a small plant press or leaf rubbing to take home.

Flowers: Colors are abundant among the flowers at Blue Heron! We'll touch and smell flowers, and pick a bouquet of colorful blossoms to take home.

Animals

Wildlife Walk: Take a wild walk on our trails. We'll search for plants and animals, and collect interesting bits of nature. Children will draw what they see.

Insects: Flying, buzzing, pollinating . . .insects are fascinating! We'll look to the sky, and under rocks and logs for insects. Children will make a small insect house.

Bird Watching: Flying, singing, eating, nesting. We'll look for birds living their daily lives at the Preserve. We'll sketch the birds we see to practice seeing patterns and colors.

Worms: Get your hands dirty in our worm bin! We'll enjoy handling squirmy worms, and look for them under rocks and logs outside.

Land and Water

Mud Pies: Explore the texture and composition of soils by making mud pies! Through this classic child's play, we'll learn why soil is important to plants and animals.

Creek Walk: Wade in the shallows of Nancy Creek and explore the life it supports. We'll look for wildlife in an out of the creek. Creek Walks are weather dependent.

Fort Building: Cooperation, gross-motor and fine-motor skills are all developed during this fun nature play program. Children will revel in turning sticks into small homes!
