Ignite imagination

Blue Heron emphasizes sensory exploration in nature.

Safely play & learn outside by catching butterflies, building birds's nests, creating rock collections, and more!

Program Topics for pre-k to elementary:

Seeds can be soft, hard, sticky, smooth and many more textures! Search for seeds in the woodlands and meadows to form a small seed collection.

Native flowers and colors are abundant at Blue Heron! We'll touch, smell, and pick flowers to make a bouquet of colorful blossoms.

Discover the different shapes and sizes of plants at the Preserve. Create a small plant press or leaf rubbing to take home.

Wildlife Walk

Take a wildlife walk on the trails! Search for and draw plants, animals, and interesting bits of nature.

Bird Watching

Sketch the birds of the Preserve as they fly, sing, eat, and nest to practice seeing patterns and colors.

Nest Making

Nests are incredible examples of architecture! We'll observe and touch real nests to design and build our own from natural objects.

Fort Building

Cooperation, gross-motor and fine-motor skills are all developed during this fun nature play program. Children love turning sticks into small homes!

Get your hands dirty in our worm bin! We'll enjoy uncovering worms from under rocks and logs. We often get to feed them to our Eastern Box Turtles.

Search the sky, poke at plants, and look under rocks for insects. Children will learn how to make small bug motels!

Mud Pies

Mud Pies are a classic way to explore soil texture and composition. Come get muddy and learn why soil is so important!

Creek Walk

Wade in the shallows of Nancy Creek! We'll look for wildlife within and around the creek.

*Creek Walks are weather dependent.

Rock Collecting

Discover the geology of Georgia on a rock collecting hike! We'll sort our dazzling finds and start our own rock collections to take home.
