Your child’s school may already host the Outdoor Explorers program.

Backyard Habitat Hunt

Search for wildlife hiding in unexpected places!
Discover the life between sidewalk cracks, in nearby plants, and within the sky above.

Urban Birds

Look, listen, and call for common birds that inhibit the city of Atlanta with binoculars.

Rock Discovery

Scavenge for and collect hidden treasures in the common rocks of the Georgia Piedmont with microscopes.

OUTREACH Details

Outreach programs focus on environmental education and outdoor time. Indoor components can be included.

  • 1 HOUR PROGRAM:

    • $55.00 for up to 15 participants. Includes one Blue Heron educator, and most materials.

    • For groups with more than 15 participants, a second Blue Heron educator can be added for an additional $30.00 fee.

    • Up to 30 participants maximum.

  • TRAVEL: $.50 per mile round trip from Blue Heron.

  • ADDITIONAL MATERIAL FEE: Dependent upon program topic.

IGNITE IMAGINATION

EMPHASIZing SENSORY EXPLORATION IN NATURE

PROGRAM TOPICS FOR PRE-K TO ELEMENTARY:

Seeds

Seeds can be soft, hard, sticky, smooth and many more textures!
Search for seeds in the woodlands and meadows to form a small seed collection.

FLOWERS

Native flowers and colors are abundant at Blue Heron.
We'll touch, smell, and pick flowers to make a bouquet of colorful blossoms.

PLANTS

Discover the different shapes and sizes of plants at the Preserve. Create a small plant press or leaf rubbing to take home.

WILDLIFE WALK

Take a wildlife walk on the trails. Search for and draw plants, animals, and interesting bits of nature.

BIRD WATCHING

Sketch the birds of the Preserve as they fly, sing, eat, and nest to practice seeing patterns and colors.

NEST MAKING

Nests are incredible examples of architecture. We'll observe and touch real nests to design and build our own from natural objects.

FORT BUILDING

Cooperation, gross-motor and fine-motor skills are all developed during this fun nature play program. Children love turning sticks into small homes.

WORMS

We'll enjoy uncovering worms from under rocks and logs.
We often get to feed them to the Eastern Box Turtles.

INSECTS

Search the sky, poke at plants, and look under rocks for insects. Children will learn how to make small bug motels.

MUD PIES

Mud Pies are a classic way to explore soil texture and composition.
Come get muddy and learn why soil is so important.

CREEK WALK

Wade in the shallows of Nancy Creek! We'll look for wildlife within and around the creek.

*Creek Walks are weather dependent.

ROCK COLLECTING

Discover the geology of Georgia on a rock collecting hike.
We'll sort our dazzling finds and start our own rock collections to take home.

Collect rocks along the trails and creek. Learn how rocks change in different environments, and sort your discoveries based on color, texture and hardness.

CREEK WALK

A walk in Nancy Creek is the perfect way to learn about rocks, soils, and fossils.
We'll seek out information about each as we enjoy the water and sand.

SOIL DISCOVERY

Uncover the properties of different soils by getting dirty and digging in various habitats.
Children will collect soil types to observe, describe and compare.

MAGNIFICENT MUSHROOMS
