Blue Heron Nature Preserve is pleased to inspire nature lovers with Blue Heron’s Art of Nature 2024. Curated by this year’s Artist-in-Residence Dorothy O’Connor, this will be the 10th annual outdoor exhibition along the Blueway Trail.

Two snake sightings at the Preserve!

Spotted this DeKay's Brownsnake (Storeria dekayi) near the Nancy Creek Overlook in the Woodland Loop. This common, nonvenomous snake is native to our area, and its diet of slugs and snails should make it a welcome sight in any habitat - but it is the species most often misidentified as Copperheads, which can lead to it being killed unnecessarily. Brownsnakes lack the distinctive pattern of Copperheads, and they tend to be small and secretive.

This Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix) was crossing the path near the Field Research Center off Land O Lakes. These common, venomous snakes have thick bodies with distinct patterning, a triangular head, and elliptical pupils. If you see one, just give it plenty of space and know it will do its best to avoid you. Keeping your pets leashed helps ensure their safety.
