Our Education program offers several classrooms located all around the Preserve.
We strive to have the children learn, play, and explore in any of our outdoor classrooms. However, we cannot always explore the outdoor world which is why we created two indoor classrooms. We focus on exploratory learning indoors just as we do in our outdoor spaces.
Blue Heron’s educational lab, The Burrow, was opened to the public for the first time in 2011. This room was renovated, with the help of a Nickelodeon grant, to create a learning space for visitors.
The grant funding allowed us to create an especially inviting environment with concrete painted floors, track lighting and new warm colors of paint for the walls. Real wooden vines and branches from the Preserve adorn the space with a host of natural objects to see and discover.
We host special events in the Burrow such as single-day workshops for teachers, professional development opportunities for teachers, tours and programs for scouts, and classes in art, nature, and science for all ages.
In December 2016, we renovated the Blue Heron second floor space and added an indoor classroom called the Nest. This space allows school break camps, after school groups, and other educational programming to spread out and enjoy the view from the windows of the loft.
